Gomez does bicoastal bounceback

Scary fall doesn't hurt rider's bid to win Pacific Classic

Before the triumphs for Garrett Gomez came the fall.

Sixth race, one week ago today. Gomez had to make a crash landing on the Polytrack at Del Mar when his mount, Bella Dancer, decided to take a sharp left a short way out of the gate, sending Gomez airborne.

More News from Del Mar

Jockey pleads not guilty to threatening wife, cops: A judge yesterday set Garcia's bail at $50,000, according to court officials. He was being held in the Pasadena jail. The jockey is accused of making several threatening phone calls Thursday to his wife, who lives in Monrovia and has a restraining order against Garcia, said Monrovia police Lt. Rick Wagnon.

Del Mar standings:

Jockey pleads not guilty to making threats: Jockey Matt Garcia, who was arrested in the Del Mar paddock area before Friday's first race, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to making threats against his wife and two police officers in Los Angeles County.

Smaller crowd bet less on Classic Day: Business on Pacific Classic Day didn't measure up to 2007 and the racing season will enter its final week here with minus numbers by comparison in all the major categories.

Yesterday's Winning Picks:

Steroids issue boils over in tunnel: Larry Benavidez was almost too emotional to talk after Dearest Trickski held on to win the Grade III, $200,000 Rancho Bernardo Handicap yesterday and qualify for the Breeder's Cup Sprint for Fillies and Mares at Santa Anita in October.

Classic win could salve Cigar burn: Bill Mott sends his regrets. But in lieu of his personal attendance, Mott has sent Go Between, the 3-1 opening-line favorite, for today's $1 million Pacific Classic. Obviously, that's something.

Jockey arrested at DM in Monrovia PD probe: Jockey Matt Garcia was taken into custody by sheriff's deputies in the Del Mar paddock and led away in handcuffs before yesterday's first race, in full view of hundreds of fans and a TVG cable network audience.

Spring House sets record pace: Ideally placed behind an ideal pace for most of the race, Spring House sprang to the front on Corey Nakatani's command in the stretch yesterday and went on to a 1½-length victory over Transduction Gold in the $250,000, Grade II Del Mar Handicap.

Student Council back to defend title: Trainer Vladimir Cerin's fondest memory of last year's Pacific Classic victory with Student Council is of a moment when the race was still in progress.

Board's steroids release met by outrage: The California Horse Racing Board reiterated and reinforced its position on the steroid issue yesterday as the Del Mar meeting's leading trainer and owners – not specifically named but implicated by recent actions – took umbrage and vowed to defend themselves rigorously if accused.

Pyro leads field in Saratoga's $1M Travers Stakes: Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Big Brown isn't around, yet other notable 3-year-olds are taking a shot at the 139th Travers Stakes at Saratoga.

Hot – R Weekend: A look at a horse, an owner, a trainer and a rider of interest in the coming weekend at Del Mar.

Pacific Classic entries:

Officials step up steroids crackdown: With the $1 million Pacific Classic just three days away, steroid allegations and drug accusations are swirling around the backstretch.

Wednesday's Del Mar results:

It's his rite: No Saturday races: The $1 million Pacific Classic is Sunday. And that's the reason we have one of the most intriguing horses, trainers and stories of the 18th running of the signature race of the summer meeting here to ponder.

Spotlight on Del Mar: Looking back on Week 5:

Thursday's entries at Del Mar:

Classic prospects get last tune-ups: Four Pacific Classic prospects put in final workouts yesterday at three venerated racing venues from one end of the country to the other.

Pacific Classic week has stable start: The beginning of Pacific Classic week, which climaxes with the meeting's $1 million signature race Sunday, was signaled with a swift workout yesterday morning by one of the major contenders.

Magical run for race's longest shot: Magical Fantasy, the longest shot in the field at 42½-1, found an opening in the stretch under Alex Solis and bolted through it for a two-length victory and an $87 upset in yesterday's $350,000, Grade I Del Mar Oaks.

Baze gets back to winning ways: For jockey Michael Baze and his horse Charlotta, the race on June 20 of this year was unfolding perfectly. The two sat right off the lead as they rounded the turn at the Hollywood Park racetrack in Inglewood.

A Friend and a brother:In a fit of creative brilliance and originality Hank Wesch has chosen “change” as the byword for his '08 Del Mar fantasy betting campaign.

Stake for Oaks reduced $50,000: The plan was for a 10-race card here today featuring the $400,000, Grade I Del Mar Oaks. Instead, it's a nine-race program featuring the $350,000, Grade I Del Mar Oaks.

Hot - R weekend:A look at a horse, an owner, a trainer and a rider of interest in the coming weekend at Del Mar...

Full field is likely for Pacific Classic: With 23 horses nominated several hours before the midnight deadline, it appeared likely yesterday afternoon that the $1 million Pacific Classic would have a full field of 14 for its 18th running Aug. 24.

Get Funky continues Sadler's run to money: John Sadler knows what folks are talking about when they speak of the mystical green flash on the beach at Del Mar at sunset. For Sadler, it's the color of the money his horses are delivering him during this meeting at the seaside track.

School dropout became chapter in track history: The book is titled “The Untold Story of Joe Hernandez: The Voice of Santa Anita.”

Jockey receives 3-day suspension: Adjudication regarding the controversial finish of Sunday's Best Pal Stakes was rendered yesterday with the board of stewards assessing jockey Victor Espinoza a three-day suspension scheduled to start next Monday.

Azul Leon claims DQ victory at Del Mar: Azul Leon remained undefeated and Kelly Leak embellished a bad boy image, deserved or not but certainly consistent with that inherited from his cinematic namesake, in a controversial ending to the Best Pal Stakes yesterday.

Healthy Sky Cape likes La Jolla: In lieu of Oceanside, they'll certainly take La Jolla. Any disappointment for Kristin Mulhall and Steve Taub at having to scratch Sky Cape from a division of the Oceanside Stakes on Opening Day at Del Mar was more than compensated for yesterday when the 3-year-old colt produced an upset, 1½ -length victory in the $150,000, Grade II La Jolla Handicap.

Lethal Heat beats boys, may try Oaks: Three-year-old filly Lethal Heat beat the boys and her own track record for seven furlongs on Polytrack yesterday, winning the 21st running of the $108,900 Real Good Deal Stakes.

Friends partner up to buy, race horses: In a sport filled with pageantry, eccentricities and upsets, it ranks as one of the more absurd – and endearing – moments of this year's Del Mar horse racing season.

Midnight Lute fastest on track: Midnight Lute, the 2007 Breeders' Cup Sprint and Eclipse Award sprint division winner, ran a seven-furlong workout yesterday morning in a faster time than the track record for the distance.

Hot - R Weekend :A look at a horse, an owner, a trainer and a rider of interest in the coming weekend at Del Mar...

Dandy ride by Candy Ride's girl: Del Mar fans will remember Candy Ride's huge win in the 2003 Pacific Classic. That was his 2-year-old daughter, Evita Argentina, romping to the upset victory in yesterday's $150,000, Grade III Sorrento Stakes at Del Mar.

Lighter Del Mar purses sign of the times: All good things eventually come to an end. And the good thing the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club has had going with purses for more than 30 years is going to come to an end when the 3.5 percent cut announced Friday takes effect one week from today.

Spotlight On Del Mar: Looking back on Week 3: Highlights: Zenyatta's smashing performance in winning the Clement L. Hirsch Handicap on Saturday to stay undefeated ... Black Mamba's late escape from traffic and victory in Sunday's Grade I John Mabee Handicap ... Soupy winning Sunday's third race.

DMTC officials eagerly await decision on Curlin: Jess Jackson, majority owner of Curlin, is scheduled to make an announcement regarding the next start for the 2007 Horse of the Year in a national teleconference this morning.

Black Mamba wins Mabee: In addition to being the nickname Kobe Bryant gave himself, Black Mamba is the name of a now multigraded stakes-winning thoroughbred mare.

Big Brown triumphs, but raises questions: Is Big Brown really back? After a too-close-for-comfort victory in yesterday's $1 million Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park in Oceanport, N.J., there could be more questions than answers about Big Brown's future.

Pegasus to Puype:In a fit of creative brilliance and originality Hank Wesch has chosen “change” as the byword for his '08 Del Mar fantasy betting campaign.

Zenyatta is 7-for-7 with Hirsch victory: Zenyatta let seven rivals array themselves in front of her soon after the start, then passed them all in rolling a seven the easy way in yesterday's Grade II Clement L. Hirsch Handicap.

Zenyatta in a zone: Like thousands of other horse racing followers, Laura de Seroux has been paying close attention to the 2008 campaign of the 4-year-old filly Zenyatta.

Del Mar forced to reduce its purses: Business being flat in some areas and down in others, Del Mar Thoroughbred Club officials yesterday afternoon announced a 3.5 percent reduction in purses effective Aug. 13, when there will be 20 racing days remaining in the 43-day meeting.
